BIBLIASPA brings you the possibility of intervening in a work or a collection, in any scope, be it paper (photographs, books, maps and documents, such as passports, certificates etc.), sculpture, painting, furniture, metals, through partnerships With restorers.

If you need to restore some work, contact us.

We work within the principles of the restoration of minimal intervention, with materials that are mostly reversible and that will not remove the legitimacy and historical, artistic and aesthetic value of the work, as well as the affective and financial value.

Mechanical cleaning with soft brush

Importance of restoration

Restoration is the preservation of public or private property. The smaller the intervention, the greater the authenticity of the work.

The restoration seeks to minimize the impact on the originality of the work, with the care of using reversible materials. Before the need for restoration intervention, it is possible to adopt precautionary measures, what we call preventive conservation.

We follow the basic principles of restoration dictated by the Italian restaurateur Cesari Brandi, who in Theory of Restoration gives us some indications:

Restoration is « any intervention intended to restore efficiency to a product of human activity » (BRANDI: 1963).

« Restoration constitutes the methodological moment of recognition of the work in its physical consistency and in its twofold aesthetic and historical polarity, with a view to its transmission to the future » (BRANDI: 1963).

 Preventive conservation

Every work has a useful life. Thus, you need special care, such as:

– storage (if the work is often transported);

– relative humidity and temperature controlled;

– exposure to the sun (morning and evening) or with artificial lighting;

– adequate ventilation at the site where the work is located.

We often believe that the use of air conditioning contributes to the safeguarding of a building site, but we forget to use deodorizers in some environments with very high relative humidity.

Applying the concept of preventive conservation, every work survives time in its original form.

Methodology of intervention in a work

Intervention.

  • All the works that are delivered to BIBLIASPA are cataloged in an inventory card of the work, with all possible history inherent to the work, as well as photographs taken before, during and after the intervention that can be done. The same happens with the works that are donated to our institution;
  • We proceed to the mechanical cleaning of the work to remove superficial or deeper soils. If it is really necessary, we will do a cleaning with chemical agents that do not damage the work;
  • The reintegration should be easily recognizable, with reversible materials, but without breaking with the unit to be reconstructed (proportional to the distance of the observer);
  • Matter is irreplaceable only when it collaborates directly in the figuration of the image;
  • Future interventions should not be prevented; On the contrary, they should be facilitated.

Postulates of restoration

First postulate of the restoration:

« Only the material form of the work of art is restored »

Second postulate of the restoration:

« The restoration must aim at restoring the potential unity of the work of art, as far as possible, without producing a historical or artistic falsification and without erasing every trace of the passage of time left in the work of art. » Cesari Brandi argues that the restored object does not return to the moment of creation, but continues to bear the marks of time, respecting temporality and its original conformation. »

The restoration of photographs and documents benefits works and research.

The maximum of the original must be maintained and, in restoring the potential unity of a work, one should not do so to the point of destroying its authenticity.”

Here are some examples of procedures for restoring:

I) Refugiados, educación, aprendizaje de portugués y aspectos lingüísticos

II) Refugiados e inserción en la sociedad

III) Refugiados, infraestructura y ocupación urbana

IV) Refugiados y representación en los medios

V) Refugiados, derechos humanos y aspectos jurídicos

WHO IS CONSIDERED A REFUGEE?

Refugees are those who are outside their country because of a well-founded fear of persecution on the grounds of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or participation in social groups, and who can not (or does not want to) return home, according to with the 1951 UN Convention relating to the Status of Refugees.

Subsequently, broader definitions have come to regard as refugees people forced to leave their country due to armed conflict, widespread violence and massive human rights violations.

IN THE WORLD

1 out of 113 people in the world is a refugee requester, an actual refugee or internally displaced person;

– Syria is responsible for the largest number of internally displaced persons (7.6 million people) and refugees (3.88 million);

– Daily, 34 thousand people leave their homes because of conflicts or threats;

– 51% of refugees are children;

– The world’s largest human displacement in history occurred in 2014. Between internal and external displacements, there were almost 60 million people.

– Developing countries receive the largest number of them, undoing the myth that most go to developed countries;

IN BRAZIL

– Brazil has about 10,500 refugees and 30,000 asylum seekers;

– In Brazil, there are refugees from more than 80 nationalities, including Syrians, Congolese, Nigerians, Iraqis, Angolans, Palestinians, Cameroonians, etc.

– Brazil welcomes about 80,000 Haitians.

IMPORTANCE OF THE TOPIC

Refugees represent one of the most significant themes in contemporary times, both in the international context and in Brazil. Every day there is news about the great flow of people seeking an alternative to situations of persecution and violence.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REFUGEES AND IMMIGRANTS

It is important to note that the refugee is required to leave his/her country to survive, it is not an option to improve his/her life. On the other hand the immigrant seeks better living conditions for himself and the family. The term immigrant refers to every person living in a country other than their homeland.

ASYLUM SEEKING

The procedure for applying for the refugee status is the first instrument of the national protection system with which the refugee has contact for the beginning of the exercise of his rights.

One of the fundamental principles established in international law is that refugees should not be expelled or returned to situations where their lives and freedom are in danger.

REFUGEE REQUEST PROTOCOL

Currently, under the terms of the Law 9.474 / 1997, the refugee, upon entering national territory, must request for refuge in the Federal Police, stating the reasons for the request for analysis.

After this initial period, the refugee receives a Provisional Protocol that serves as a legally valid document, so that he can remain in the country until the final analysis of his request. This document also guarantees the issuance of the Work Card.

INFRASTRUCTURE

Generally, refugees face great difficulties in finding work, housing and access to public services. One of the obstacles to claiming their rights, but not the only one, is the difficulty of communication because they do not speak the Portuguese language.

Mahmud Darwich (1941-2008), poeta palestino

Escuche a continuación:

Unfortunately, there are growing manifestations of intolerance in Brazil and in the world. Situations of prejudice, xenophobia and racism against immigrants and refugees include hate speech in social media, verbal and physical aggression.

How do we combat intolerance, racism and xenophobia?

  • Promoting awareness through lectures, debates, seminars, publications, exhibitions and cultural actions;
  • Showing the intellectual and cultural heritage of refugees and how this framework benefits Brazil, renewing the Brazilian arts and making the country more multilingual and diverse;
  • Organizing meetings and actions in favor of this integration: the Movement for Immigrants and Refugees, founded in Bibli-ASPA stands out. Every week, members of this movement (in partnership with the Federal Public Ministry, the State Public Ministry, the Public Democratic Ministry’s Offices, etc.), which includes judges, prosecutors, lawyers, teachers, social assistants, etc., coming together to think collectively about strategies of Integration, education, insertion in the labor market and access to public services.

Bibli-ASPA offers guidance, referral and follow-up for both the SUS and hospitals, clinics and medical partners, also assisting in translation and interpretation in consultations and examinations.

Bibli-ASPA offers psychological assistance in partnership with dedicated professionals. In addition, the establishment of ties with other immigrants and refugees assisted by the Bibli-ASPA (which often went through analogous situations) helps in the process of insertion and integration in Brazil and in the continuation with the new life.

Bibli-ASPA provides transportation for refugees. In this way, they can participate in educational, social and cultural actions, including not only the course of Portuguese and Brazilian culture. They must be provided with means to enable them to reach the institution.

We accept financial donations and-or subway, bus and train tickets to meet this demand.

In the Bibli-ASPA, all refugees receive food, sometimes the only one of the day. The moment of the meal is also an opportunity for socialization and fraternization, essential for socializing among refugees, and between them and Brazilians.

Musical Instruments from South America, Africa and Arab Countries

Berimbau – has an arch made of wooden rod, with a length of 1,20m to 1,60m, and steel wire attached to the ends of the pole. At one end of the arch is attached a gourd that functions as a resonance box.

Kora – has a resonance box made of gourd and strings originally of antelope skin. The player uses the thumb and forefinger of both hands to strum the strings. The sound produced by the kora is similar to that of the harp.

Lute – An instrument that has significant symbolic power in Arab culture and on which many studies on tuning in Arabic music are based. The lute arm, small and (currently) fretless, requires virtuosity and enables the creation of ornaments.

Zampoña – constituted by a set of graduated tubes closed at one end, of different sizes and connected to each other side by side. The instrument is blown and the sound is produced by the vibration of the air stream.

The travel reports illustrate how the sense of home and the other one is produced and transformed.

The link between travel and the pursuit of knowledge is clear and transcends cultural and historical boundaries; Therefore, BibliASPA has a line of research on « Travel narratives as a metaphore of the search for knowledge ».

The borders of South America and the Arab and African countries are permeable, crossed by travelers whose paths reveal common characteristics in the cross-cultural production of knowledge.

Travel narratives are acts of translation, practices of seeing, doing, making one self doing, hearing and making one self be heard.

Here we present reports on South American, Arab and African countries:

The riches of Tunisia

Tunisia is a country full of good reasons to visit. Most of all, it highlights its historical aspects, a result of the strong presence of the different people who have passed through here. It was for these reasons that we decided to visit this country and go on an adventure. A small country, but quite wonderful. This is Tunisia, a nation established in North Africa that has fascinating attractions in areas lightly larger than half of the State of São Paulo.

From the blue coast of the Mediterranean Sea to the Sahara Desert there is a world different from ours in the geographic, population and cultural sense. There you can see ruins of the Roman Empire, many in better preservation than those in Rome, beautiful cities lit by the scorching sun, mosques, medinas (ancient cities, surrounded by walls, houses and shops), dug villages in stone, dromedaries, deserts and oases.

Book at least a week to get to know Tunisia. There are specialized guides who make sure that the tourists leave very well informed. The hotels are excellent and the service is great. If you have the time and money, a good advice is to stay at one of the many luxurious resorts on the beautiful beach of Hammamet. There, the night life is marked by the excitement of the casinos.

A flight from Sao Paulo to the capital Tunis takes about 11 hours. Already at the airport, the tourist is surprised by sumptuously oriental decoration.

A must stop is the city of Monastir. Be sure to visit the mausoleum of Habib Bourghiba, built by him long before his death.

Just half an hour from the capital, on the Mediterranean shore, is Carthage. Registered by Unesco in 1972, the city is important to the history of mankind and holds traces of past glories of Tunisia. Visit the city without haste, photograph the ruins, enjoy the columns and arches of the buildings still intact. More recently Carthage was rebuilt and today houses the presidential palace, as well as mansions painted in white, where high society lives.

Near the town of Tataouine is Chenini, a village with a little more than 100 Berber families who live like their ancestors, in semi-troglodytes houses, completely dug in the mountains.

Arriving in Douz, the main attraction is the dromedaries. There tourists can wander through the Sahara Desert on these animals.

Jerba Island is also sensational. To get there you have to take a ferry from the port of Gabes. The island is noted by many as the high point of Tunisia’s tourism. Surrounded by the turquoise blue sea, the island is populated by the Jerbians, who live from fishing, mainly from the octopus. Inside the island there is the Synagogue of Agribe, the oldest in the country.

Even though it is a liberal country, foreign tourists have to take care not to be misunderstood. In Tunisia the Muslim religion predominates, so dress in well-behaved clothes. Bargaining is part of the culture, you can buy a product with up to 90% off. The desert climate is dry and warm, do not forget to bring sunscreen. Do not drink tap water, buy mineral water. There is no sweetener; If you like, carry it in your bag.

Tunisian cuisine has wonderful dishes, be sure to try the kus-kus, a dish made with farofa, chicken and potatoes. The languages of Tunisia are Arab and French.

For these and many other reasons worth getting to know Tunisia, this Arab country that is discovering the value of tourism and conquering people from all over the world. Good trip!

Claudia Mohamed, a Muslim from the Moroccan family, graduated in tourism, a professional photographer and a writer in love with Tunisia.

« A man needs to travel. On his own, not through stories, pictures, books or TV. He needs to travel by himself, with his eyes and feet, to understand what is his. To one day plant his own trees and give them value. Knowing the cold to enjoy the heat. And the opposite. Feel the distance and the shelter to be right under the ceiling. A man must travel to places he does not know to break this arrogance that makes us see the world as we imagine it, not simply as it is or can be. That makes us teachers and doctors of what we did not see, when we should be students, and just go and see.  »

Song: Seven Seconds

Arabic music is basically divided into three groups: folklore, written pieces and improvisations.

The traditional instrumental formation, commonly called takhtcharqy, is composed of qanun, lute, violin and nay flute, accompanied by a percussion instrument, usually the daff. The first ones take charge of the melodic part and the latter gives rhythmic support. In the last decades, this formation has been supplemented by other traditional instruments, such as buzuk or cawala, and in some cases an accordion tempered with intervals of tone quarters, and other instruments such as the oboe or clarinet, in which Intervals can also be obtained. In addition, due to the need to fill the tessitura with more serious sounds, the viola, cello and double bass are often present, this being the formation of most classical orchestras.

Arabic music has more intermediate notes than Western music and recognizes three notes in whole tones called quarter-tone (¼-tone). Unlike Western erudite music, built on intervals composed of tones or semitones, this language also depends on three quarter-tone intervals. Simplifying, let us imagine that between the Mi flat and the natural Mi there is an intermediary degree whose convention is to call Mi mediumbemol.

Arab music is based on some major modes (called Maqamat), each with its proper scales and intervals. From these modes, others branch out.

Archaeological contributions in Syria

Some of the world’s major archaeological sites are in Arab, African and South American countries. Here are some of them:

EBLA

cuneiform board, Ebla.

The Kingdom of Ebla, considered one of the greatest discoveries of the twentieth century, brings the discovery of the Royal Archive, composed of five thousand inscriptions.
This archive revealed the history of the region during the period between 5500 and 4500 BC in relation to customs, traditions, political relations, and administrative and economic reality.
The archaeological site was discovered about 55 km south of Aleppo in 1964.

BOSRA

Ruins, Bosra

Bosra is a complete Roman-style town. Its amphitheater is considered the main complete amphitheater of the world. The city houses one of the oldest mosques in the world and a cathedral from the Byzantine period. It was first mentioned in inscriptions found at Tell el-Amarna 3,400 years ago. The Nabataeans ruled the region until, in 106, Bosra became part of the Roman empire. It was capital of the Roman province of Arabia.

ALEPPO

Fortress, Aleppo

The ancient city of Aleppo has been continuously populated for at least 5000 years. Throughout this period it was ruled by almost all the great empires, from the Hittites to the Assyrians, through the Mongolians to the Ottomans. The city boasts a large 12th-century mosque and 13th-century citadel, built on an archaeological site dating to at least 3,000 BC.

DAMASCUS

Damascus

Capital of Syria, Damascus was founded in the third millennium BC. Excavations around the city in Tell Ramad suggest that humans have lived in the region for at least 8,000 to 10,000 years. Traces of the city’s ancient heritage still stand today in various places, including a temple to the god Jupiter of the Roman Age, the walls of the ancient Roman city and the Umayyad Mosque, from the 8th century AD.

PALMIRA

Palmira

Palmira oasis was the main trading post between Persians and the Romans. The city was first mentioned in the second century BC and acquired great relevance under Roman rule. In Palmira, there are important buildings such as the Temple of Bal, the Avenue of Columns, the Arc de Triumph, the theater, the public bathrooms and the markets.

BABYLON, IRAQ

Ilustrations of the Sudpended Gardens, Babylon.

Important center of ancient Mesopotamia, the Suspended Gardens of Babylon were a marvel of the ancient world. Babylon had great prominence during the reign of Nebuchadnezzar II (605-563 BCE); Its ruins, located 85km from Baghdad, help us to remember the rich history of Iraq.

BAALBEK, Lebanon

Known as « the city of the sun, » Baalbek, in the fertile Beqaa Valley in Lebanon, is among the best preserved Roman ruins in the Middle East. Built in magnificent dimensions that rival even ancient Rome, it gathered pilgrims from all over the empire for worship. Baalbek hosts an art festival annually and has become an important cultural center.

SHIBAM, Yemen

Famous for its  architectural characteristics, the 16th-century walled city of Shibam (Yemen) is famous for its astonishing tower-like structures. The town grew because of its location as an important caravan stop on the route of the seasoning and incense route through the southern plateau of Arabia.

ANCIENT JERUSALEM.

Ancient Jerusalem has got, long ago, a great significance. As a reflection of this, the winding streets within the ancient walled city are divided into Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Armenian neighborhoods. Among the various sacred sites of ancient Jerusalem, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and the Dome of the Rock are probably some of the best known sites. Dating back to the 7th century, the Dome of the Rock is considered the place where Abraham would have offered his son in sacrifice.

KARNAK, Egypt.

Statues of Ramses II, as Osiris, temple of Karnak

Near Luxor, Karnak is a large religious complex full of shrines, pylons, obelisks, and particularly the Great Temple of Amon. Much of this complex is dedicated to Amon, fundamental god of ancient Egypt. Karnak is a modern place name; The old denomination was Ipet-isut, which means « The holiest places ».

MADAIN SALEH, Saudi Arabia.

This pre-Islamic archaeological site is the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in Saudi Arabia. Most of the archaeological site of Madain Saleh is a vestige of the Nabatean civilization, which existed around 1,000 years ago. This site is the largest and most southerly settlement in Saudi Arabia, after Petra, the capital of the Nabataeans located 500km north, in present-day Jordan.

CARTHAGE, Tunisia.

Ruins of Carthage.

Carthage was founded by the Phoenicians in the 9th century BC in the Gulf of Tunis. Due to its strategic location, it has developed into a large commercial empire present in much of the Mediterranean. Carthage was destroyed by the Romans in 146 BC during the Punic Wars. A new Carthage was rebuilt with Roman aesthetics over its ruins.

“If you want to excel in calligraphy, dedicate yourself to your Lord and Master”, Ibn Bawwab (séc. XI)

Present in day to day objects, multiple temples, in museums and residencies, the Arab calligraphy is the most revered artistic representation in the Islam, because of its link to divine revelation. It congregates science and art, and sometimes, it refers to the holy as a means of transmitting a message from the Koran and an exaltation of the divine.

“Say: nothing will reach us except what was prescribed by God”. DIWANI JALI with ornamental art. Nanking on paper Couché, 2006.

By excellence an Arab and Islamic art, the calligraphy is better known as ḫaṭṭ, from the verb to ḫaṭṭa, which means to draw a line, revealing the link between the drawing and the term.

Representing an extreme refined art to which one adds arabesques, between the geometric and the vegetal , it aquired a harmonic balance between different letters and ornamental patterns

This way, in the Arab calligraphy, letters can acquire distinct forms according to its position in the word, which allows flexibility and unlimited ornamentation.

The literary production is an essential part on the construction of people’s identity, history and memory. It is also a powerful instrument which acts throughout life, instilling principles, values, guiding ways of seeing and understanding the world. This way one can consider the impact of the intense contact with characters, questions and solutions presented by the stories one hears, since childhood, in representations and identifications we seek in life.

A literary production which omits or erases specific presences or that builds stereotypes to define what is beautiful, desirable, right or wrong, unfortunately contribute to building prejudice. On the other hand, literature can be an essential element of the process of deconstructing prejudice itself.

The definition given by UNESCO for the term Culture of Peace means the commitment to promote and experience respect for one’s life and dignity without discrimination or prejudice, rejection of any form of violence, sharing of time and resources generously.To end exclusion, injustice and political and economic oppression, to develop freedom of expression and cultural diversity through dialogue and understanding of pluralism, to maintain responsible consumption respecting all forms of life and to contribute to the development of the community, Area, country and planet.

The BibliASPA shares this vision (see Who We Are) and has been absolutely committed so that, these principles permeate all the actions it develops, in an interdisciplinary way.

On a daily basis we seek to promote the culture of peace and cultural expressions of the Arab, African and South American peoples for the benefit of mutual respect and diversity.

We organize actions, projects and study groups on the subject frequently.

Rap for Peace

BibliASPA students created Rap for Peace with Arab and Brazilian students; Among other moments, the Rap was presented at CriançaEsperança. Listen below:

Observe the chorus !: All living with Hubb (حب – love) and Salam (سلام – peace). Mussáwa (مساواة – equality) … Wahda (وحدة – union) … that we have to learn and keep, all living with Hubb (حب – love) and Salám (سلام – paz). Mussáwa and Salam, Equality and Peace, for me and for you.

Did you know?

Did you know that « Assalamaaleykom » (السلامعليكم, May peace be upon you) is one of the principal greetings used in Arab and Muslim countries?

Tent of Peace

BibliASPA organizes actions that promote cultural diversity, mutual respect and integration  that motivate public interest and participation.

The Tent of Peace is a stimulus to exchange ideas and strengthen appreciation for cultural exchange. Hospitality is an important asset in ASPA, so the welcome can offer, coffee, books, art and education.

Tents also organize activities linked to social and individual memory, recording oral histories, for example.

There are great thinkers and artists in South America, in the Arab countries and in Africa (that is, in ASPA space) who help us to think the world and seek reflection and transformation. That is why we have gathered quotations from some of them:

South America

« To make tomorrow the impossible of today, we must make today the possible of today »

Paulo Freire (1921-1997), educator and Brazilian philosopher

« Knowledge is learnt from the masters. Wisdom only with the ordinary of life «

Cora Coralina (1889-1985), Brazilian writer

Africa

« Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world »

Nelson Mandela (1918-2013), former president of South Africa, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize

Arabs

« All of us on this beautiful planet are neighbors, we are all refugees, we all walk in the same human destiny, and what unites us is the need to tell the story of this exile. »

The integration between South America and the Arab Countries has intensified so much in recent years that the acronym ASPA (A of America, S of South, P for Países (Countries) and A for Arabes) has been widely used in the academic, artistic and political world.

ASPA cooperation (between South America and the Arab countries) has generated interest in areas such as culture, education, economics, science and technology,the environment and social issues.

As an accomplishment in the process of inter-regional rapprochement, we highlight the intense cultural and educational exchange established by the creation of the Library and Research Center of South America-Arab Countries (Bibli-ASPA, which has been developing several projects, translating books And organizing exhibitions, courses, film shows, the SACA Festival, etc.) and technical cooperation in reducing impacts and coping with desertification and soil degradation processes.

The South American-Arab Countries (ASPA) Summit is a mechanism based on South-South cooperation and coordination in multilateral forums, whose objective is to bring together leaders and civil societies from the countries of the two regions.

The creation of the ASPA mechanism was proposed by Brazil in 2003.

Thirty-four countries, including South American and Arab States, are part of ASPA.

Under the ASPA mechanism, it is possible to cite several documents highlighting BibliASPA’s role in strengthening cultural and educational cooperation between the Arab and South American countries (ASPA), including:

CORE AMRÍK – Arab Immigration Project in South America

The Amrík Center – Arab and Muslim Immigration Project in South America, one of the BibliASPA research groups, proposes to study the Arab presence in South America through oral, textual and iconographic sources. South America was one of the main destinations chosen by Arab communities that migrated in the context of the Ottoman Empire and later.

EDWARD SAID RESEARCH CORE – Orientalism and postcolonial studies: inventions of an Orient and non-Western spaces

The theoretical construction of the East, which appears in works of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, had as its initial objects Egypt, Palestine, Syria, Algeria and Morocco, among others, according to the theoretical studies of Edward Said, in particular « Orientalism, » from 1978. Next, we analyzed the representation of regions such as the Indian sub-continent, sub-Saharan Africa, China and Japan. Said anticipated a chain of cultural studies, post studies Which originate from theoretical developments produced by intellectuals based in metropolitan academic centers but from peripheral regions, especially from former British and French colonies. The intellectual Edward Said was known for his eloquence, clarity of lucidity and in depth insight. His essays were on literary criticism, music, history and migration, about Bach, Baldwin, Conrad (whose work The Heart of Darkness echoes in some of his writings), Gramsci, Lukacs, Mahfuz, Melville, Merleau-Ponty, Nietzsche, Vico, VS Naipaul, Umm Kalthum and Glenn Gould, among others. Born in Palestine, he saw much of his family become refugees and taught many years in New York. He wrote fundamental works such as « Orientalism », « Reflections on Exile » and « Culture and Politics ».

CORE IBN BATTUTA – Travel narratives as a metaphor for the search for knowledge

The journey as a metaphor and practice makes possible the self-knowledge and the knowledge of others. Although Islam and the West are increasingly portrayed as hermetically sealed and antagonistic, it is known that their boundaries are permeable, traversed by travelers from many directions whose trajectories reveal common features in the cross-cultural production of knowledge. To imagine that these are two uniform entities whose boundaries are clearly demarcated erases the fissures within each category and the mutual historical debts between them, without citing the intense contemporary interpolation. To the extent that the explicit link between travel and the pursuit of knowledge is itself mobile, as it transcends cultural and historical boundaries to evoke resonances and anxieties through language and time, travel is a translation term, and the accounts Of these trips are also acts of translation, practices of seeing, doing, making oneself see, hear and make themselves heard. Each new meeting reveals different vectors of comparison for the traveler.

CORE AMADOU HAMPÂTÉ BÂ – Religion, ethnic identities and hybridity: narratives of origin, orality, body discipline and trans-regional experiences

The group also proposes to analyze the processes of constitution of the religious fields, emphasizing the trans-regional interactions that articulate different meanings and meanings of the historical and textual experiences of the religions. According to Subrahmanian, the connections of ideas within the spatialities of the empires allow for flexibilities of the social experiences of the sacred in transnational and diasporic contexts. The flexibility of religious practices also results in processes of control and disciplinariation of bodies which, in Foucault’s sense, translate into themselves the idea of a religious field as a place for the enunciation of experience. Reflections on the activation of multiple identities in diverse contexts and the hybridism characteristic of contacts and imaginaries allow us to broaden our understanding of the representations of the other and of self-image.

TÁRJAMA RESEARCH CORE – Translation and analysis of manuscripts and works in Arabic, Ottoman, Persian, Kiswahili, Tamil, Konkani, Portuguese and Spanish

The objective is to promote the reading and analysis of manuscripts and key texts translated directly from the original language, whether Arabic, Ottoman Turkish, Persian, Kiswahili, Malay-Indonesian, Tamil, Kongo, Portuguese, Spanish, English or French, Without an intermediate language between the text of departure and the one of arrival. The proposal to translate directly from the original language aims to contribute to a change in this framework and reduce the linguistic and cultural domination of the hegemonic centers.

CONTEMPORARY ART IN THE MIDDLE EAST: Between cultural, linguistic, religious tradition and transnational flows

This line explores the society-state interface by comparing the artistic production of Middle Eastern countries with a critical reading of the idea of Islamic specificity (and other religious beliefs), especially in the face of national and linguistic identities and the diversity of experiences. Traditional forms of reinterpreted or reformulated art, as well as new means of visual expression, and their insertion in transnational flows of symbolic goods will be examined.

CHE GUEVARA CORE – Comparative national experiences: Latin America and Arab countries

The process of building up Latin American nationalities since World War II has presented new perspectives for thinking about trans-regional ties, given the historical emergence of third-worldism as an intellectual and political alternative inaugurated by the Afro-Asian countries at the Conference of Bandung (1959).

In this line, relations between Latin America and the Arab countries will be focused, from the context of immigration resulting from the end of the Ottoman Empire to the study of diplomatic, military, cultural and economic relations in the context of the Cold War.

Emphasis will be placed on contemporary intellectual, artistic, religious and political relations in the context of globalization and the resignifications of the identities of diasporic Arab communities in the Americas.

NUCLEUS REFUGE IN RESEARCH – Refugees in Brazil and in the world

The number of refugees in São Paulo and other cities in Brazil is increasing; In the last four years, the number of refugees has increased more than tenfold, and this is one of the topics of greatest expression in contemporary times both in the country and in the international arena. Every day we see news about the great flow of people who want better living conditions and an alternative to situations of persecution. BibliASPA seeks to promote the integration of refugees, works for its self-sufficiency and basic social assistance (such as housing, health, food, clothing, obtaining and renewing documents) and develops similar research.

Among the themes associated with this line of research are:

I) Refugees, education, Portuguese language and linguistic aspects

II) Refugees and integration into society

III) Refugees, infrastructure and urban occupation

IV) Refugees and representation in the media

V) Refugees, human rights and legal aspects

VI) Refugees and democratization of access to public services

VII) Refuge and foreign policy in Brazil

VIII) Refugees, cultural aspects and artistic production

IX) Afro-Arab tourism and refugees

X) Refugees, generalizations and discrimination

XI) Refugees and psychological aspects: from displacement to integration and insertion

NUCLEUS AMRÍK – Arab Immigration Project in South America

The Amrík Center – Arab and Muslim Immigration Project in South America, one of the BibliASPA research groups, proposes to study the Arab presence in South America through oral, textual and iconographic sources. South America was one of the main destinations chosen by Arab communities that migrated in the context of the Ottoman Empire and later.

EDWARD SAID RESEARCH NUCLEUS – Orientalism and postcolonial studies: inventions of an Orient and non-Western spaces

NUCLEUS IBN BATTUTA – Travel narratives as a metaphor for the search for knowledge

Common questions

l’apprentissage (bloc-notes, stylos, crayons, livres, etc.).

In their countries of origin, refugees were employed and had their own professions, which unfortunately had to be put on hold due to their vulnerable condition. Many of them have a substantial resume, with expertise and know-how that can be useful to your company. See below the CV of refugees assisted by BibliASPA. Be ready to see your company thrive with their drive.

BibliASPA offers legal aid to immigrants and refugees free of charge. The Movement for Immigrants and Refugees, founded at BibliASPA, comes into its own. This movement is made up by a partnership among BibliASPA and the Federal Public Ministry, the State Public Ministry’s Office and other public agencies. Our members, among whom are judges, prosecutors, attorneys, lawyers, teachers, social workers, etc., gather regularly to defend the rights of refugees and immigrants and to think collectively about strategies for their reception, integration, education, placement in the labor market and access to public services.

BibliASPA often promotes bazaars at its office to raise funds for the refugee cause. Please help us by sending clothes, paintings, and other objects in good order so that we can promote these events constantly at the institution.

BibliASPA develops a Portuguese language and brazilian culture program for foreigners at its headquarter in São Paulo at Baronesa de Itu Street, 639, Santa Cecília, two blocks away from Marechal Deodoro metro station.

Currently there are seven classes of portuguese for refugees (from different nationalities, including syrians, Iraqis, Palestinians, Sudanese, Nigerians, Ivorians, Congolese, Senegalese, Ghanaians, Haitians, Afghans, Bolivians, etc.). Foreigners of any nationality are most welcome. It is known that the number of refugees in São Paulo and in other cities of Brazil is increasing and this is one of the most relevant issues nowadays.

The second most spoken Latin language in the world, Portuguese is the official language in Brazil, Portugal and some African countries, such as Angola and Mozambique.

Besides the language, students have the opportunity to know cultures e costumes of Brazil, considering that culture is a fundamental aspect to language learning.

In this course performed by BibliASPA the student learns the different aspects of the language – oral expression, listening comprehension, reading and writing – in a practical way linked to real situations of everyday life, stimulating communication and the exercise of citizenship.

This way the student can develop communicative skills, acquire phonetic-phonological and lexical structures in oral language and acquire morphosyntactic structures in oral and written language.

The didactic material used in the course is developed by the team of Portuguese language teachers and researchers on Portuguese language for foreigners.

The program consists of four modules and includes assessments at each stage, with an emphasis on the refugee’s ability to handle everyday life.

The Course seeks to offer refugees food and learning material (notebook, pens, pencils, books, etc.). At the moment, BibliASPA seeks support for these actions and also so that it can offer transportation to the refugees, since many of them do not have the money to take the metro or the bus.

BibliASPA looks for a way to offer transportation to refugees, if possible through student tickets, since Portuguese language helps to promote the integration of them and allows them to have a better chance of finding a job, especially in the current crisis situation of the country.

The social relevance of this project is expressive considering that it provides means for the refugees to ensure their rights of access to public services, besides seeking to enable them to find work, housing and other rights.

Available times are: Tuesday, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Thursday from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Saturday, from 10 am to noon; and Saturday, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

BibliASPA associated with some companies and institutions to invest in a project which aims at renovating the institution’s kitchen. This space will be expanded and completely refurbished, with benches and other fixtures required to give cooking classes, workshops and courses for refugees, who will be able to learn or improve their techniques in gastronomy.

This project is of great importance, since a significant portion of the immigrants who come to Brazil work with cooking. As a mater of fact, the typical cuisine of their countries and regions of origin, such as the Arabian and the African ones, have become more and more widespread among Brazilians.

Currently, we already offer gastronomy courses, but the kitchen needs to be expanded and renovated to serve more students and to open a cafe with special foods.

Come and see the project!

We need the support of more companies for this project!

Who is considered a refugee?

Refugees are those who are outside their countries because of a well-founded fear of persecution on the grounds of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or participation in social groups, and who can not (or does not want to) return home, according to the 1951 United Nations Convention on the Status of Refugees.

Subsequently, broader definitions started considering as refugees people forced to leave their countries because of armed conflict, widespread violence and massive violation of human rights.

Some numbers

ALL OVER THE WORLD
– 1 out of 113 people in the world is a refuge applicant, refugee or internally displaced person;
– Syria is responsible for generating the largest number of internally displaced persons (7.6 million) and refugees (3.88 million);
-Every day, 34 thousand people abandon their houses because of conflicts and threats;
-51% of refugees are children;
– The world’s largest human displacement in history occurred in 2014. Considering internal and external displacements, there were almost 60 million people.
-Countries in development process are the ones receiving the biggest number of refugees, undoing the myth that the majority go to developed countries;

IN BRAZIL
-Brazil has around 10.500 refugees and 30 thousand refuges applicants;
-In Brazil, there are refugees from more than 80 different nationalities – including Syrians, Congolese, Nigerians, Iraqis, Angolans, Palestinians, Cameroonians, etc.
-Brazil resettles around 80 thousand Haitians.

The importance of the topic

WHY TO TALK ABOUT IT?
Refugees represent one of the most significant topics of discussion nowadays, both in the international context and in Brazil. Every day there are news about the big influx of people seeking an alternative to situations of persecution and violence.

Difference betwenn refugee and immigrant
It is importante to notice that the refugees are obligated to leave their countries to survive, it’s not an option to have a better life. On the other hand, the immigrants seek better conditions for themselves and their families. The word “immigrant” refers to every person who lives in another country but not his homeland.

Refuge application
The procedure for applying for refuge is the first step of the national protection system with which the refugee has contact to start the realization of his rights.

One of the fundamental principles established in international law is that refugees shouldn’t be deported or returned to situations where their lives and freedom are in danger.

Refuge request protocol
Currently, under the terms of Law 9.474 / 1997, the refugee, when entering national territory, must request the refuge application in the Federal Police, stating the reasons for the request for analysis.

After this first step, the refugee receives a temporary protocol that is legally valid, so that he can stay in the country until the end of his request’s analysis. This document also guarantees the issuance of a work record booklet.

Infrastructure
Normally, refugees face big difficulties to find jobs, residencies and access to public services. One of the challenges to claim their rights – but not the only one – is the communication obstacle since they don’t speak Portuguese language.
